Healt of the Ragdoll - Belgian Ragdoll Club

A Ragdoll lives between 12 and 15 years on average, but with proper care, a healthy diet and regular vet checkups, some Ragdolls can live even older, sometimes up to 18 years or more.

Factors such as genetics, nutrition, exercise and regular preventive health care play a large role in a Ragdoll’s life expectancy. By paying attention to hereditary conditions (such as HCM and PKD) and treating health problems early, owners can help give their Ragdolls a longer and healthier life.

Responsible breeders therefore perform various tests to ensure the health of the Ragdoll and prevent serious genetic disorders as much as possible. Below we discuss the some common disorders in the Ragdoll.

Common disorders

  1. HCM (Hypertrofische Cardiomyopathie)
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart disease in which the heart muscle becomes thickened, which can lead to heart failure. This disease is unfortunately quite common in the Ragdoll, and there is a genetic test that can specifically detect this condition. It is essential that breeding cats be tested to reduce the risk of HCM in kittens. Breeding animals are also tested via ultrasound.
  2. PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a kidney disease in which cysts form in the kidneys, which can lead to kidney failure. This disease can be transmitted genetically, which is why it is important to test breeding stock to prevent it from occurring in offspring. The breeder can use a dna test and ultrasound to rule out this disease.
  3. CIN (Chronische Interstitiële Nefritis) Chronic Interstitial Nephritis, or CIN for short, is a chronic kidney disease that unfortunately also occurs in Ragdolls. CIN is characterized by long-term inflammation of the kidney tissue (the interstitial cells) and can lead to loss of kidney function. Although CIN can occur in many cat breeds, it appears that certain lines within the Ragdoll breed may be more susceptible to it, making it important to be familiar with this condition. Testing can be done via ultrasound.

Lifestyle

  1. Obesity
Because of their laid-back nature and tendency to be less active, Ragdolls can develop obesity. This increases the risk of various health problems, such as diabetes and joint disease. A balanced diet and regular playtime can help prevent obesity.
  2. Dental Problems
Dental problems such as gingivitis and tartar sometimes occur in Ragdolls. Regular dental care and vet checkups can help control these problems. Gum disease is also more common in some lines.

How to determine healthy weight in your cat

Ragdolls are a large and robust cat breed, known for their soft and muscular build. But because size can vary considerably within the breed, it can be difficult to maintain a standard healthy weight for the Ragdoll.

A 6 kg Ragdoll may be too light on one cat, while it may be considered too heavy on another individual.  Instead of relying on general guidelines or what other people say, it is helpful to use a particular system to determine weight. For example, a common misconception is that a belly fat patch means that a Ragdoll is overweight. This layer of fat is actually part of the breed and is not necessarily a sign of being overweight.

To assess your Ragdoll’s healthy weight, it is best to feel rather than look. Place your fingers on the side of your cat’s ribs and gently slide the skin back and forth. If you can just feel the ribs without applying much pressure, you’re fine. If you don’t feel the ribs, then your cat is too heavy, and if you feel them too strongly without pressure, then he may get some extra food.

Keep track of your Ragdoll’s weight regularly by noting it so you notice changes quickly. Should there be unexplained fluctuations in weight – especially weight loss – it is wise to contact your veterinarian. In this way, you will ensure that your Ragdoll not only remains at a healthy weight, but can also live a long and happy life!

The Importance of Responsible Breeding

Performing these health tests is critical to ensuring healthy Ragdoll lines. Responsible breeders work with veterinarians and specialists to ensure the health of their cats and to identify and avoid potential inherited disorders in their breeding lines. Potential buyers are advised to ask about the health tests performed on the parents when purchasing a kitten and to only purchase a kitten from a reliable breeder who prioritizes the welfare and health of their cats.

When choosing a Ragdoll as a pet, it is important to be well aware of these health risks and invest in preventive care, such as regular vet checkups and a healthy lifestyle. This way, you can enjoy a happy and healthy cat that will be part of your family for a long time!
